The Bridgman system is one of the oldest crystal growth methodologies for growing a single crystal. A Bridgman system consists of a multi-zone furnace and a translation drive. The work is melted in one zone, then translated into another, cooler, zone. The molten material is introduced to a seed crystal, and once in the cool zone, a single crystal is grown. There are many variations of the Bridgman technique, additions of adiabatic zones between the hot and cold zones. Bridgman systems can be vertical or horizontal, with varying benefits in each orientation.

HEATING ELEMENTS

MELLEN can provide furnaces for temperatures up to 1250ºC utilize APM, FeCrAl, or chromel wire. APM heating elements are capable of 1250ºC in air, while FeCrAl heating elements can achieve 1200ºC, and chromel heating elements are capable of 1100ºC in air.

For temperatures up to 1550°C MELLEN Bridgman furnaces utilize silicon carbide, or platinum heating elements. The iron chromium aluminum elements are capable of temperatures up to 1325ºC through a custom cross section and element design. Platinum elements can be used for temperatures up to 1450ºC in air.

Silicon carbide elements can be used for temperatures up to 1550°C. These elements operate with low surface-watt loading for longer life at elevated temperatures. They are strategically engineered to maximize element life without compromising uniformity of heating within the furnace.
