Thermocouples

Mellen thermocouples are temperature sensors that are composed of two dissimilar metals fused together that produces a change in the voltage when heated.  This change in voltage is interpreted as a change in temperature.

MELLEN thermocouples are composed of various metals for various temperature requirements.

MELLEN thermocouples are carefully packed and inspected in individual carriers designed to arrive in your workspace protected and secure.  MELLEN's packaging allows for shipment from our door to your lab with cleanly designed packaging for easy storage until use.

Thermocouple Selection Criteria

There are different thermocouples for every type of temperature measurement.  MELLEN strives to provide you with the proper thermocouple for your applications.  MELLEN bases thermocouple selection on the following criteria:

  • Temperature Range - what is the highest and lowest temperature you wish to measure?

  • Uses - what substances are you measuring? what substances will the thermocouple come in contact with?

  • Installation Requirements - what chemical resistance, sheath material, abrasion/vibration resistance, grounding and immersion needs do you have?

Please use the chart to determine the correct type of thermocouple for your needs:

TYPE COMPOSITION APPLICATION  TEMPERATURE RANGE
B Platinum - Rhodium oxidizing, inert * 50oC to 1450oC
C Tungsten Rhenium vacuum, inert, hydrogen;    NOT for oxidizing 750oC to 2320oC
E Nickel Chromium or Nickel Aluminum oxidizing, inert, limited uses in vacuum -200oC to 900oC
J Iron constantan low temperature uses -40oC to 750oC
K Chromel-alumel clean oxidizing, inert -200oC to 1250oC
N Nickel - Chromium or Silicon - Magnesium alternative to Type K -270oC to -1300oC
R Platinum - Rhodium oxidizing, inert * 0oC to 1450oC
S Platinum - Rhodium oxidizing, inert* 0oC  to 1450oC
T Copper - Nickel oxidizing, reducing vacuum, cryogenic applications -200oC to -350oC

* Do not insert in metal tube
