Above 1200 C has always presented issues for the standard Fe-Cr-Al heating
elements. For that reason, Kanthal
created APM wire. At MELLEN, we
have done extensive testing of the different combinations of heating element
element wire and we have discovered that, although APM wire is a real
improvement over standard Fe-Cr-Al, its really just half of the equation to
operation at 1300 C. The current
industry standard method of taking a regular ceramic clamshell or flatplate
and stuffing APM wire in it instead of the normal Fe-Cr-Al and calling it a
1300 C element, just doesn't cut it.
Here at MELLEN we have discovered that small diameter APM wire (1.0 mm
- 1.5 mm) gives only a marginal improvement to the life at elevated
temperatures. That why when you
come to us and ask us for a standard clamshell or flatplate made from APM
wire, you will notice that we quote it as a 1250 C element and recommend that
you keep the operating temperature at or below 1200 C for increased life.
It is this EXACT issue that prompted us to begin research into
extending the life of our standard 1300 C heating elements.
What we have come up with are three distinctly different elements, each
with its own advantages and disadvantages - Our series 12.5C and 12.5V,
standard APM wire 1.5 mm or smaller in ceramic holders or our special vulcan
design, Series 13VHD, Heavy Duty APM windings (2.0 mm or larger) in our
special Vulcan series holders or finally Series 13VREH, an extremely thick,
specially designed wire specifically made to radiate heat better at high
temperatures. With these three
designs MELLEN has covered the range of people who need to go only
occasionally above 1200 C all the way to people operating at 1300 C
constantly. If you fit into that
range, then read on below for specific descriptions of the three different
series of elements, as well as their advantages and disadvantages.
